In order to be an AMAZING judge for the NJSDL. We ask all of our judges the following:

1. Review the NJSDL Judging Manual – Updated October 2020 so you have up-to-date information on events/rules, etc.

2. Know how to setup and access ballots?

  • Visit speechwire.live/judging for a tutorial on how to judge with Speechwire.com. (most NJ events & others) featuring Ben Stewart, founder of Speechwire.com. 
  • Visit tabroom.live/setup for a tutorial on how to setup a Tabroom.com account (regional & national events).  Thanks to Jeff Kahn of Strath Haven High School.
  • Visit tabroom.live/judging for a tutorial on how to fill out ballots in Tabroom.com. Thanks to Bro. John McGrory of Chaminade High School.
  • Is your tournament using classrooms.cloud

3. Review the NJSDL Equity Pledge and take the Cultural Competence Judging online course, sponsored by the National Speech & Debate Association and the National Federation of High Schools.

3.5 – Review this video by PA coach and friend, Cory Shay, on the importance of ballot writing.

Highly-qualified, trained, and enthusiastic judges are essential to what we do. They are the lifeblood of our activity. To that end, the League sponsors several judge training sessions each year that are completely free. We update this page each time we schedule a judge training session each year.

National Speech & Debate Association Online Training

The NSDA has partnered with the NFHS to create a a free online judge training course. If you can’t attend an in-person training, this is an excellent resource!
